Spring and Easter Toxins
As we come out of Winter and head into Spring, we are often surrounded by things we often wouldn't consider to be toxic to our pets. Here are some of the common things we see every day which can harm our pets:
- Spring bulbs: these include daffodils, lily of the valley, lillies, bluebells, azaleas, etc. (list is not exhaustive but if you have many flowers in your garden, it would be a good idea to know what they are and whether any of your pets are at risk)
- Fungicides: one of the most common ones being... WEED KILLER!
- Antihistamines
- Rodenticides
- Dried fruit: raisins and sultanas (hot cross buns!!)
- Grapes
Across the UK, many of us will be celebrating Easter and some homes may be getting a visit from the Easter Bunny. It is crucial to make your children aware of the importance of keeping chocolate out of reach of ours pets as this can make our cats and dogs very poorly. Here are some commonly asked questions about why chocolate is classed as a toxin to our pets:
Why is it toxic to animals but not to humans?
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which are methylxanthine compounds which our pets cannot metabolise very well. When metabolised, it happens very slowly, causing a build up within their system which then produces a toxic effect.
Can I give my pet white chocolate?
No. A quick Google search will show you that the darker the chocolate, the higher the theobromine levels - making dark chocolate more toxic than milk chocolate. Although white chocolate offers the least amount of theobromine, it is still an ingredient within the chocolate bar therefore still classed as toxic.
What do I do if my pet has eaten chocolate but seems well in themselves?
I would advise that you contact your veterinary practice immediately, explain what your pet has eaten, how much and the type of chocolate. Your practice may advise monitoring or advise to go into practice immediately. It's important that you take any wrappers with you so the veterinary team is able to have a look at the ingredients as this can help with the next steps.
