Nail Clipping
Do my pets nails need clipping?
If your pets nails are tapping away on the floor then yes, it's probably time to get them clipped. Sometimes it's mainly the dew claws and front nails that need clipping but all nails should be checked during an appointment.
Is it important to get my pets nailed clipped?
Yes. If your pet's nails become too long it can lead to pain and injury. Nails are able to curl around and become embedded into their pads which can cause further pain and complications such as infections.
Longer nails are more prone to breaking which can also be painful. If left over a long period of time, long nails can lead to spinal and posture problems, difficulty walking, lameness and also affect your pets quality of life.
How often should I get my pets nails clipped?
Every animal different. Some animals need their nails clipping monthly, some may only need it every few months. Active dogs who are often walking on the pavement/concrete may only need to have their dew claws trimmed every so often.
Can I use human nail clippers?
No, please do not use human nail clippers or scissors. Our pet's nails are completely different to ours and by using the wrong tool can lead to painful splits or damage to the nail. If you are unsure how to clip your pets nails, you can book here to book in a home visit with a registered veterinary nurse.
My pet doesn't like their feet being touched!
It is a good idea to familiarise and desensitise your pets from having their feet touched and handled. When sitting with them on an evening you can start at their upper limbs and work your hands down to their feet slowly. Over time, they will become less anxious. Just like humans, our pets can have tickly feet too!
When touching their feet and they're responding how you would like them to, reward them with a treat. Get them used to having their feet touched, seeing the nail clippers and associating the experience with a reward rather than it being a 'traumatic experience' that they sometimes think is going to happen.
Over time, animals will lose the anxiety and sit nicely to have their nails clipped.
Can I book my pet in to have their nails clipped with you?
Yes! Of course you can. You are able to book a home visit here.
