Dog Thefts

Dog theft is something we commonly read online and in the news. It's nothing new, it's just something to think about. Although a very sad subject, it's something we all still have to be aware of and take caution with.

In 2024, it was reported that approximately 1,800 dogs were stolen across the UK (that is around 5 dogs a day!). In May 2024, a new legislation came into place which makes stealing a pet a criminal offence. This legislation is called "Pet Abduction Act 2024". Anyone caught stealing a pet could face up to five years in prison, a fine, or both. This is potentially why there's been a reduction in dog thefts as thefts in 2023 were 21% higher than 2024.

The most popular breeds being stolen:

  • English Bulldogs
  • Staffordshire Bull Terriers
  • Chihuahuas
  • Labradors
  • German Shepherds
  • XL Bullys (although the banning of this breed has reduced theft by 50% so far)
  • Rottweilers
  • Border Collies
  • Jack Russells

People often ask "why do people steal dogs?!". Well, they're stolen to breed and/or to gain a financial reward.

How to prevent dog theft:

  • Never leave your dog unattended
  • Make sure they are microchipped and the details are kept up to date
  • Security cameras around your home
  • GPS tracking on collars (although easily removed)

What do I do if my dog has been stolen?

Report your dog as being missing or stolen to the police, microchip database and then spread the word that your dog is missing. Once this has been done, share information on social media, put posters up in local areas, check all regular dog walks.
